Asbestos & Vermiculite
Asbestos is a contaminant that can be present in the materials of older homes. Air Saphir is at the service of property owners wishing to perform an air analysis following the renovation or demolition of a building in Montreal, Terrebonne as well as the South Shore and North Shore regions of Montreal.
At your service 7 days a week, our team, along with a certified laboratory, will be at your disposal within 24 hours!
Why is Material Sampling Essential?
Any building material that has been removed may contain asbestos, which is released in small fibers into the air if your house dates from the 1930s to the 1990s. Prior to demolition work, you must have the materials sampled by a certified laboratory using the following methods:
IRSST Method 243.1
IRSST Method 244
Asbestos in materials is not dangerous if it is not friable. However, when removing it, a decontamination protocol must be put in place for the health and safety of occupants and workers.
In Quebec, building owners and contractors are required to sample the materials before undertaking any stripping work. Otherwise, they may be subject to a fine and/or criminal prosecution.
Materials That May Contain Asbestos
- Gypsum
- Ceiling Tiles and Suspended Ceiling Panels
- Cement Lining Panels
- Decorative Plaster
- Flexible Fabric Duct Fittings
- HVAC Duct Insulation
- Joint Compounds
- Pipe Insulation
- Sprayed Insulation
- Structured Coatings and Paints
- Vinyl Floor Tiles
- Wall Panels
Vermiculite, which also contains asbestos, is commonly used as thermal insulation for attics and roofs.
When removing asbestos-containing materials, small asbestos fibers will be released into the air. These fibers are very harmful if inhaled. For this reason, removal work must be performed in asbestos conditions according to the procedures and protocols established by the CNESST.
Air Saphir will provide you with the decontamination protocol when the materials are removed.
Your Health is a Great Priority
Asbestos exposure, especially if you breathe heavily contaminated air, can cause lung cancer and other serious respiratory diseases. Your immune system is also at risk from asbestos exposure. It is therefore essential to have the air quality tested in your building if you are doing renovations or demolition! Not to fret – Air Saphir is here to help!
Asbestos in Quebec
Did you know that materials containing asbestos and other types of asbestos have been banned in Quebec since 1990? As an owner or tenant of residential and commercial buildings, you have legal obligations to respect.
